Speakers Dr. Dan Challener and Dr. Edna Varner from the Public Education Foundation walk through how recent changes in federal, state, and county education policies and legislation will impact Hamilton County Public Schools.

This class, presented in partnership with the League of Women Voters Chattanooga and The Chattery, delved into the basics of international trade and tariffs, and explored the potential effects of recent policy proposals.

Civics Class with Jeremy Strickler, Associate Professor of Political Science at UTC

This class, presented in partnership with the League of Women Voters Chattanooga and The Chattery, delved into the separation of powers in the U.S. federal government and explored how the legislative, executive, and judicial branches are meant to check and balance each other—and what it means when that system starts to break down.

Civics Class with Councilwoman Raquetta Dotley

February 2025

This class, presented in partnership with the League of Women Voters Chattanooga and The Chattery, will cover key topics such as the role of City Council, zoning regulations (including Short-Term Vacation Rentals), tax incentives, and the connections between city, county, and state governments. The session concluded with a Q&A, providing an opportunity for discussion and questions.

Girls Inc. of Chattanooga x LWV of Chattanooga

December 2024

The League of Women Voters of Chattanooga teamed up with Girls Inc. to inspire young girls to get involved in civic activities, focusing on issues like government, schools, and local matters. The event featured a reading of “Little Miss Flint” about youth activist Mari Copeny, along with a bracelet-making activity to promote creativity and community.

The League of Women Voters of Chattanooga hosted a candidate event focused on the Hamilton County State Assembly races. Held at Bessie Smith Hall, the event provided a platform for community members to engage with candidates, ask questions, and gain insights into their positions on key issues.

Youth Voter Registration Training

February 2019

The Chattanooga League held Youth Voter Registration training at the Edney, where participants learned best practices for registering high school and college students in preparation for a spring voter registration drive funded by a grant from the LWVUS Education Fund.

Brown Bag Lunch Meeting

January 2019

At Brown Bag Lunch meeting, League members and guests discussed the Chattanooga League’s focus issues for 2019—civics education, restoration of voting rights, and ending voter suppression—and signed up to support these efforts.

Meet & Greet

September 2018

Voters in Tennessee state House districts 26 through 30 had the chance to meet candidates at a Meet & Greet co-sponsored by the LWV of Chattanooga, the Women’s Fund of Greater Chattanooga, UTC’s Women’s Studies Dept, and Mocs Go Vote 2018. The public event, held at UTC’s University Center, featured candidate self-introductions, with a video available on the LWV of Chattanooga’s Facebook page.

Political Candidate Forum

March 2018

The League of Women Voters of Chattanooga, in partnership with The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Chattanooga Chapter, hosted a Political Candidate Forum ahead of the Hamilton County May 2018 Primary Election. The forum, moderated by Edna Varner, aimed to educate the public about candidates’ platforms, helping voters make informed decisions.

Campaign Workshops

October/November 2017

The League of Women Voters of Chattanooga co-sponsored two Campaign Workshops in October and November, aimed at helping women run for elective office.

Workshop with Kate Coyne-McCoy

October 2017

A workshop was held at The Well in Chattanooga, featuring Coyne-McCoy, who led training on planning and strategy for women in political campaigns. The workshop, part of the fifth session of the Chattanooga Women’s Leadership Institute’s civic engagement series, included a panel of women with campaign experience.

Elective Office Workshop

November 2017

The Elective Office Workshop, held from 4-9 pm at Chattanooga City Hall, provided high school and college-age women with insights into gender and politics, featuring Dr. Amanda Wintersieck, a Political Science professor, and a welcome from Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke. Participants interviewed local female elected officials, learned about campaign management from Stacy Richardson, and then worked in teams to create a campaign for the first female mayor of Chattanooga, developing a message poster and stump speech to present.

Voter Registration Drives

September 2017

The League of Women Voters of Chattanooga celebrated National Voter Registration Month by holding multiple voter registration drives throughout the Chattanooga area in September, including one at the Chattanooga Public Library, downtown branch, on September 26 (National Voter Registration Day).
